Why AVD

Why Azure Virtual Desktop

$0

No extra license — AVD access is included with eligible Microsoft 365 and Windows Enterprise licenses. You pay for the Azure resources you use.

  • You pay only for compute, storage and networking
  • External users: $10 per user per month for desktops, $5.50 for apps (Microsoft per-user access pricing)
  • A Health Check shows your real cost per user
Multi-Session

Made for Azure — Windows 11 multi-session is only available on Azure.

  • Windows 11 Enterprise multi-session
  • Familiar desktop for every user
  • Fewer VMs to patch and manage
Hybrid

AVD Hybrid — Run AVD session hosts on the hypervisor you already own, or on dedicated physical servers, connected to Azure through Azure Arc. See AVD Hybrid →

  • Generally available since September 2026
  • Windows 11 Enterprise (single-session) or Windows Server 2025 hosts, outbound HTTPS only
  • Keep data and latency-sensitive desktops on-site, managed from Azure

Azure figures are Microsoft’s own, from datacenters.microsoft.com and azure.microsoft.com (October 2026). Pricing is Microsoft’s US list price and can change.

AS-BUILT DIAGRAM

The diagram above shows how AVD fits together in general. An AVD As-Built draws your environment: users, host pools, profile storage, images, backup and every connection, from the collected data.

  • Drawn from your data. Built from the read-only collection, not from a template.
  • Never guessed. Anything the data doesn’t hold is drawn dashed or marked “not collected”.
